Challenge

The Netflix Halloween Doorbell was inspired by an insight from the Netflix PR team that every Halloween, pause rates spike as viewers get up to give out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Strategy

We wanted to support the Netflix PR story of surging pause rates and Halloween preparedness with a fun, clever, and press-worthy DIY device that surprised and delighted a wide audience, while underscoring the Netflix commitment to innovation and personalization.

Execution

The Netflix Halloween Doorbell became the third hit of the Make It campaign.

When pushed, the doorbell plays spooky clips from Netflix shows and directs trick-or-treaters to candy with a customized message, so viewers can enjoy non-stop streaming of scary movies and shows. DIY-ers can also add some character to their device with 3D printable acrylic faceplates inspired by some of the spookiest Netflix shows.

We released DIY step-by-step instructions and a video on the Make It website, as we did with the other Make It projects, inviting fans and makers to create and customize their own doorbell. We announced the launch through a partnership with Make Magazine.
