Challenge
How do you create huggable, larger-than-life robots that dance and interact autonomously? We solved this by blending advanced robotics, software, and whimsical design to bring FriendsWithYou's BAND to life—an interactive art piece sparking connection and wonder.
Strategy
We merged creative tech and artistry to bring the BAND to life. Custom robotics, motion tracking, and ultrasonic navigation let the robots roam and interact, while hand-stitched details, responsive lighting, and vibrant faux fur added personality. FriendsWithYou’s guidance and Norman Bambi’s score perfected their “live” dance performances.
Fuzzy, furry besties ready to dance
Our first step was defining the dimensions—an 8’6.5” height and 6’ width—for safe interaction and smooth movement. Each BAND member featured an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), a custom frame, an upholstered cover, and integrated lighting.
Autonomous movement through custom tracking
We built a custom camera system with blob tracking for human movement and AR markers for calibration. An ultrasonic beacon system guided the robots, using pulses from room beacons and microphones on the BAND members to prompt movement and reorientation.
